Why Study in Spain?

Before anything else, let us outline the important factors that will support your decision to study in Spain.

World-renowned education: Spain hosts numerous globally renowned universities that offer an array of study programmes across diverse fields. Spanish universities have made names for offering high academic standards, well-qualified and experienced faculty and innovative research.

Exposure and immersion in rich culture: From vibrant festivals to delectable cuisines to phenomenal architecture, Spain has been widely attracting tourists from around the world. Not to forget, the country has a massive influence on many Latin American cultures. Spain is also among the many global fascinations. Studying here in the country is an excellent opportunity for international students to enjoy a complete cultural immersion, enhancing their educational journey and experiences significantly. Your higher educational journey will be more eventful and wholesome as you get exposure to one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites as the largest number. Apart from the lively and vibrant cities, festivities and culture, students will have a massive takeaway from their experience in Spain.

Affordable Living: Nothing beats it when it comes to the affordable cost of living. From relatively low education costs to affordable living, Spain is just the right place for students seeking high-quality education at affordable costs. This affordability condition makes Spain an attractive option for international students seeking quality education without emptying their banks.

International Outlook: Spain is among the most welcoming countries for international students. The universities in the country have a considerable number of foreign students arriving every academic year. The country's strong and easy connectivity with other European countries is an added advantage for overseas students to explore everything, from academic pursuits to career opportunities.

Language Learning Opportunity: Learning one of the world's most spoken languages in the native country is a terrific opportunity. The educational programmes may not necessarily be taught in the Spanish language, yet students can learn from different avenues, including language courses within the university.

Favourable Climate and Atmosphere: Besides beautiful countryside and beaches, Spain has a comfortable climatic condition.

Spain's Higher Education System

With the kind of quality education that Spain offers, it is not surprising that it is among the most favourable destinations for overseas students. Spanish universities have made names for high-quality teaching and impactful research. The country places a premium on doctoral training and development. The doctoral and postgraduate research programmes have structured course content and strong partnerships and collaborations with non-academic entities.

International students will find both public and privately owned higher educational institutions organised into schools known as facultades. The facultades are further divided into separate departments, offering students the chance to enrol in the fields of their interests, like humanities, science, management and business studies. International students desiring to continue their studies further in the EU region can benefit greatly, as Spain also aligns with the Bologna ECTS system. Spanish universities and degree programmes follow the standard three-cycle format under the Bologna system. Let's dissect the details of the education system at the postgraduate and doctoral levels.

Postgraduate/Master's Degree Programmes

The postgraduate programmes at Spanish universities typically span two years and furnish 60-120 ECTS. The master's degree programmes in Spain demand a lot of research and individual work, as the programmes aim to orient students into expert specialists in their fields of study. The postgraduate programmes also emphasise skills development and application along with building strong theoretical knowledge.

Popular postgraduate degrees

International students can pursue postgraduate degrees across different fields. The prominent disciplines include law, engineering, computer science and natural sciences.

  • Masters in Business Administration

  • Masters in Architecture

  • Masters in Economics

  • Masters in Tourism

  • Masters in International Relations

  • Masters in Biotechnology

  • Masters in International Economics

Cost of Pursuing a Master's/Postgraduate Degree in Spain

Pursuing higher studies in Spain is comparatively cheaper than in other European countries. In Spain, international students can expect to spend about EUR 1,000 to 3,500 in a year at publicly owned universities. The cost may be a little higher in privately run universities/institutions and can go up to EUR 20,000 in a year. However, the costs or tuition fees will depend on the fields of study and the student's nationality. Students may work part-time jobs during their studies to manage their finances better. There are several scholarships and funding from the Spanish government, universities, autonomous community governments and other entities. Students can get financial aid from these avenues to support their study abroad in Spain.

PhD/Doctoral Degree Programs

The PhD research/doctoral programmes in Spain typically take 3 to 5 years, furnishing a total of 60 ECTS. These degree levels are accessible only after attaining a master's degree. Like all traditional research/doctoral studies, PhD candidates will be required to conduct extensive research, complete necessary coursework, submit their doctoral dissertation and defend it before a doctoral research committee to be conferred the doctorate title. Spain offers plenty of comprehensive, extensive and efficient doctoral programmes or development and training programmes, with a renowned reputation for their high-quality teaching, research and innovation. International students aiming for a doctoral research programme in Spain may expect to have exposure to an excellent research opportunity, as the country's education system focuses on extensive research. They can explore the varieties of disciplines that Spanish universities offer, including technological science, natural sciences, law, arts and humanities, social sciences, health sciences, etc. The PhD programmes are well-structured and usually organised by the academic commission of the university. The maximum duration for research programmes is typically 3 years, with a scope for extension of 2 years. The extension years must be specially approved by your university’s academic commission.

The PhD programme entails students undertaking extensive research, attending training courses and taking active part in other academic activities. The PhD programmes are typically structured into two stages (ciclos):

  • First Stage: Coursework covering 60 ECTS

  • Second Stage: Research and Thesis Writing

International students studying in a Spanish university as a PhD candidate will be registered in any one of the two:

  • University student: With similar rights and status to other university students

  • Research Trainee and University student: Common among doctoral candidates and has funding status and other additional rights

PhD Supervision and Assessment

Apart from the Academic Commission, Spanish universities mandate two supervisors each, with separate responsibilities for every doctoral program. They are assigned as:

i) Mentor: This supervisor monitors and takes care of the PhD candidate's interaction with the Academic Commission.

ii) Thesis Director: This supervisor mentors your thesis development and is responsible for the training activities plan and ensuring the student's thesis meets the impact and novelty standard. This director will guide you in your research, and the academic commission may also change this individual anytime.

Besides these two designated mentors, students will be assigned additional supervisory figures like co-directors for multidisciplinary PhD programmes or programmes that have multiple base institutions.

How is the PhD/Doctoral Research Assessed?

While the doctoral thesis forms the major part of assessing, there are several other aspects of the programme for assessing PhD students. The areas of assessment include:

  • Student's activity portfolio: The portfolio includes all the relevant activities of training and research that the student has undertaken throughout the doctoral programme. The thesis director and the mentor regularly review this document.

  • Doctoral Research Plan: This is the roadmap on which the research thesis is carried out. It includes the research prospective methodologies, objectives and resources. The students are allowed to amend this plan throughout the doctoral program but must complete it and get it approved by the thesis director and mentor by the end of the first year.

  • Written agreement: This document details the student's rights and responsibilities, which is signed after the programme admission.

Application Process

The application and admission process in Spain varies depending on the individual institution and the programme of study. Prospective candidates seeking admission must directly contact the potential university. Although each institution may have varying procedures, in general, the application process in Spanish universities is straightforward. Students can contact the doctoral programme's academic commission and programme coordinator to check seat availability and learn in detail about the application process of that particular university. Universities have varying deadlines for applications.
